Good Green Deeds, a campaign promoting responsible waste management, launched in Umsunduzi Local Municipality. Ministers and KZN MECs; Dr Zweli Mkhize, Nomvula Mokonyane, Barbara Thomson, Andries Nel, MEC Weziwe Thusi, MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube conducted a cleaning campaign in Umsunduzi. Multi million rand construction plant from KZN Cogta to assist municipalities was officially unveiled. Community members and workers responsible for cleaning were educated about the business opportunities on waste and cautioned CWP and EPWP to perform their duties diligent to discourage the perception that those employed under these programmes are not working, judging from the cleanliness. MEC Dube-Ncube said it is difficult to relate the issues of increasing hours or pay if the areas serviced are full of dirt. Community were also encouraged to get involved in recycling projects.\n\n\n\nDr Mkhize reminded the members of the community and workers that Umsunduzi is the Capital City Of KZN and lamented how embarrassing to the visitors to see it surrounded by stinking garbage. He asked the community to preach importance of keeping the environment clean to others about and ordered that the municipality leadership do a self introspection, because the President or Ministers can not afford to come back to clean. The launch took place at Imbali Township in Umsunduzi and the cleaning happened in Pietermaritzburg CBD on 22.03.19<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n

In response to President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s call on all South Africans to take charge and clean up their living environment, KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube has, in the presence of national Ministers of Cogta Dr Zweli Mkhize and Environmental Affairs Nomvula Mokonyane, Deputy Minister of Cogta Andries Nel and KZN MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, today launched \u201cGood Green Deeds\u201d in the Pietermaritzburg CBD.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s massive clean-up campaign, which will be rolled out to the rest of KZN, has been designed to clean up sidewalks and storm drainage and cut grass and verges. It will also address illegal trading, law enforcement, by-laws transgressions and illegal posters, as necessary. We have made a good effort in Pietermaritzburg CBD this morning with the help of dozens of government and municipal officials,\u201d said Dube-Ncube who personally joined one of the clean-up teams.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s launch commenced early with the unveiling of millions of rand worth of yellow plant equipment which is destined for municipalities which have been hiring such equipment for local clean-up operations at enormous cost. The newly purchased equipment will help in cleaning drains, rebuilding infrastructure and improving the general environment in KZN\u2019s municipalities, many of which have struggled with general cleanliness.<\/p>\n

The equipment include: \u00a016 x TLB, 11x Graders, 15 x Water Tankers, 18 x Rollers, 19 x Honey Suckers, 6 x fire trucks, 1 x long base fire engine totaling R104 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to clean-up operations in the province\u2019s municipalities, the government will also take steps to ensure that citizens are informed when their grass will be cut, refuse collected and environment cleaned.\u00a0We are pleased to report that many businesses are already showing enthusiasm and promising to avail their staff, adopt a spot to clean regularly and donate equipment for this province-wide clean-up campaign,\u201d said Dube-Ncube.<\/p>\n

Community members and workers responsible for cleaning were educated about the business opportunities on waste and cautioned CWP and EPWP to perform their duties diligent to discourage the perception that those employed under these programmes are not working, judging from the cleanliness. MEC Dube-Ncube said it is difficult to relate the issues of increasing hours or pay if the areas serviced are full of dirt. Community were also encouraged to get involved in recycling projects. Dr Mkhize reminded the members of the community and workers that Umsunduzi is the Capital City Of KZN and lamented how embarrassing to the visitors to see it surrounded by stinking garbage. He asked the community to preach importance of keeping the environment clean to others about and ordered that the municipality leadership do a self introspection, because the President or Ministers can not afford to come back to clean.
