Overview<\/strong><\/h3>

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works<\/strong> remains committed<\/strong> to creating a bright future<\/strong> for students who qualify for placement through In-Service Training<\/strong>, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. In-Service Training refers to practical work experience during studies, typically after one or two years<\/strong> of theoretical study have been successfully completed.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The purpose<\/strong> of granting students the opportunity to do their In-Service Training programme is to provide them with an in-depth understanding of the field they are studying through the practical application of theoretical knowledge.<\/p>

Students are placed within the department to undergo in-service training, where they:<\/p>

  • Will be fully engaged<\/strong> in essential work experience that is part of their qualification and necessary to achieve their qualification.<\/li>
  • May be paid, unpaid, or receive a small allowance to cover travel and other related costs.<\/li>
  • Will practically learn through skills transfer for a duration usually ranging from 6 months to a year<\/strong>, or up to 18 months<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • Will receive a stipendiary payment from the Department, or payments that Setas may offer to employers from discretionary grant funds.<\/li>
  • Are required to complete a logbook<\/strong>, which is used to measure their performance by the Department and their educational institutes.<\/li><\/ul>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    In an effort to move the Province of KwaZulu-Natal forward, the Department has made significant progress in finding many directions for stimulus and career pathways for youth development through In-Service training. To date, the following benefits of the programme have been realised:<\/p>

    • Promotion of personal development.<\/li>
    • Building of individual confidence on the part of the students.<\/li>
    • Reduction or elimination of staff turnover.<\/li>
    • Attraction of suitable employees.<\/li>
    • Providing an affordable learning environment for students.<\/li><\/ul>

      \u00a0<\/p>

      The implementation of In-Service training will continue to lay a fundamental assurance that properly assessed students are placed in the right stage of learning and training, without repeating the training they have already received.<\/p>
