Overview<\/strong><\/h3>

The KZN Integrated Greening Programme<\/strong>, as the brainchild of the KwaZulu-Natal Province<\/strong> was officially launched on the 5th of June 2011<\/strong>, with the cultivation of a unique partnership amongst the KwaZulu-Natal Province<\/strong>, the Wildlands Conservation Trust<\/strong> and Business South Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The project was first implemented for the Harry Gwala District Municipality<\/strong> (then Sisonke District Office<\/strong>) was and remained an ideal opportunity for the KZN Department of Public Works<\/strong> to continue marketing itself through the promotion of the use of sustainable energy sources<\/strong> that could then possibly stand as an example for future Provincial Government infrastructure planning<\/strong> and building design<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The Department adopted the initiative to act innovatively and positively in the face the widespread Global Warming<\/strong> phenomenon and Energy Crisis<\/strong>. Global Warming<\/strong> and the Energy Crisis<\/strong> in South Africa<\/strong> generally indicated the urgent need to move away from the non-sustainable use of fossil fuels<\/strong> as a primary energy source and for alternate sources of sustainable energy supply<\/strong> to be tested and utilized, especially in the built environment<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The KZN Department of Public Works<\/strong> therefore proposed to champion \u201cgreen design<\/strong>\u201d principles for all phases of this new service and to utilize the programme in setting future possible Provincial Government norms and standards<\/strong> for:<\/p>

  • local community empowerment<\/strong> through their local skills and labour,<\/li>
  • low energy efficient building design<\/strong> comprising passive solar heating and cooling,<\/li>
  • natural ventilation<\/strong>,<\/li>
  • rainwater harvesting<\/strong> and<\/li>
  • the use, as far as possible of natural \/ local construction materials<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    The KZN Integrated Greening Programme<\/strong> focuses on greening activities such as growing and planting indigenous and edible plants<\/strong>, collecting recyclable waste<\/strong>, restoring community assets<\/strong>, trading bicycles<\/strong>, water tanks<\/strong> and solar energy devices<\/strong>. Since its launch, thousands of trees<\/strong> have been planted and work opportunities<\/strong> have been created around the province. The KwaZulu \u2013 Natal Integrated Greening Programme<\/strong> seeks to improve the quality of life by providing positive work opportunities<\/strong> that contribute to environmental restoration<\/strong> and protection<\/strong>. This is a wave and pockets of achievement that the KZN IGP<\/strong> seeks to move on in order to foster and enhance community awareness<\/strong> and support.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
